In short

What is YouTube Advertising? We plan YouTube campaigns around a defined video role in the funnel, then measure them against lift and downstream conversions rather than views alone.

What can you expect from this work?

  • Measurable reach at a controlled cost per view
  • Growth in branded search volume during campaign periods
  • Retargeting audiences built from qualified video viewers
  • Placement quality that protects brand safety

Overview

YouTube advertising is the practice of buying video placements across YouTube and Google video partners to reach a defined audience with a message that either creates demand or converts it. It is the only large-scale channel where a brand can hold attention for thirty seconds and still be measured against a business outcome.

The most common mistake is treating YouTube as television with a dashboard. Views are cheap and easy to buy. Views that change behavior are not.

Decide what the video is supposed to do

Before any budget question, one thing has to be settled: what job does this video have?

  • Awareness. Reach as many relevant people as possible at a controlled cost per view. Measured by reach, view rate and, where volume permits, brand lift.
  • Consideration. Explain the product to people already aware of the category. Measured by view-through rate, retention curve and downstream site engagement.
  • Direct response. Drive a specific action from a tightly defined audience. Measured by conversions and cost per acquisition.

A single asset rarely performs all three roles. When a client asks for “a YouTube campaign,” the first deliverable is usually clarity about which of these three is actually needed this quarter.

Formats and what they are good for

Format Length Billed on Best used for
Skippable in-stream 15-180 seconds View or interaction Consideration and direct response
Non-skippable in-stream Up to 15 seconds Impressions Guaranteed message delivery
Bumper 6 seconds Impressions Reinforcement, frequency building
In-feed video Any Click to watch High-intent discovery
Shorts Vertical, under 60 seconds View or impression Younger reach, mobile-first products

Shorts inventory behaves closer to social video than to traditional YouTube. The hook window is shorter, vertical framing is mandatory, and creative that works in Feed placements often transfers well.

Audiences: search intent is the strongest signal

YouTube sits inside the Google ecosystem, which means audiences can be built from search behavior rather than from stated interests alone. In practice the strongest performing segments are usually:

  1. Custom segments from search terms — people who recently searched for the problem your product solves
  2. In-market audiences for the relevant category
  3. Your own data — site visitors, customer lists, previous video viewers
  4. Competitor and category placements, where allowed and relevant
  5. Broad demographic reach for awareness campaigns where narrow targeting only raises the cost per view

We also build the exclusion side deliberately: existing customers excluded from acquisition campaigns, converted users excluded from remarketing, and a maintained list of low-quality placements removed from delivery.

The first five seconds decide the campaign

Retention curves are the most useful creative diagnostic available. A steep drop at second three means the hook failed. A drop at second twelve usually means the message arrived but the payoff did not.

What we look for in creative:

  • A visual or verbal hook that identifies the audience immediately
  • The brand present early, not saved for the final frame
  • One idea per video rather than a product catalog
  • Captions, because a large share of viewing happens with sound off
  • A specific, single call to action with a matching landing page

Reusing footage you already own

Many brands already have raw material that never made it into an ad: product demonstrations, factory footage, installation videos, customer conversations. Editing existing footage into a proper hook-and-payoff structure is frequently faster and more effective than commissioning new production.

Measurement: what to watch instead of views

Video rarely gets credit in last-click reporting. Someone watches an ad, searches your brand two days later, clicks a Search ad, and Search takes the conversion. That is not a reason to stop running video; it is a reason to measure differently.

  • Branded search volume during and after campaign flights
  • View-through conversions, read as directional rather than exact
  • GA4 audience behavior for users who arrived after video exposure
  • Brand lift studies where spend levels qualify
  • Holdout comparison where the account structure allows a clean geographic split

We report these alongside direct conversions and are explicit about which numbers are precise and which are directional.

International video campaigns from Antalya

Moon Workshop is based in Antalya, Türkiye, and runs YouTube campaigns aimed at viewers in Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the United States. Localization goes beyond subtitles. Pacing expectations differ, humor rarely survives translation, and claims that are normal in one market may be restricted advertising language in another.

For each market we prepare a language version, native-language subtitles, market-appropriate end screens, and a landing page in the same language and currency. Sending a German viewer to an English checkout page is the fastest way to waste an otherwise well-performing campaign.

Working cadence

YouTube campaigns need daily attention in the first two weeks — mostly placement pruning and frequency control — then settle into a weekly rhythm of retention analysis, creative rotation and budget reallocation. Reporting is monthly, with a clear statement of what changed, what was learned, and what happens next.

Scope

What we deliver

The concrete outputs inside this service. Every item appears as a line in the proposal.

Video strategy and funnel role

We define what each video is supposed to do — create awareness, explain a product, or close a considered purchase — before any budget is allocated.

Audience and placement plan

Custom segments built from search behavior, in-market and affinity audiences, channel and topic placements, and exclusion lists that protect brand safety.

Campaign build across formats

Skippable in-stream, non-skippable, bumper, in-feed and Shorts campaigns configured with the right bidding model for each objective.

Creative direction and editing guidance

Hook structure, aspect ratio variants, caption and end-screen requirements, plus cutdowns of existing footage into ad-ready lengths.

Measurement beyond views

Brand lift setup where volume allows, view-through conversion tracking, GA4 audience segments and assisted conversion analysis.

Optimization and reporting

Placement pruning, frequency management, creative rotation and monthly reporting connected to downstream Search and site performance.

Process

How we proceed

The steps are fixed; duration and depth change with the scope of the work.

  1. Step 1

    Objective definition

We agree on whether the campaign is for reach, consideration or direct response, because the three cannot be optimized simultaneously.

  2. Step 2

    Audience research

Search-intent based custom segments, competitor channel mapping, topic and placement research for the target markets.

  3. Step 3

    Creative preparation

Hook and script review, format cutdowns, subtitle and localization requirements for each market.

  4. Step 4

    Launch and frequency control

Staged budget release with frequency caps, exclusion lists applied from day one and daily placement review in the first two weeks.

  5. Step 5

    Analysis and iteration

Retention curve analysis, placement cleanup, creative rotation and reallocation toward the formats producing downstream action.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The topics clients ask about most before a proposal.

Can YouTube ads drive direct sales, or only awareness?
YouTube can do both, but not with the same campaign. Awareness campaigns optimize for reach and cost per view, while direct-response video campaigns optimize for conversions and need a much tighter audience and a clear call to action. We separate the two so neither metric distorts the other.
Do we need a professionally produced video?
Not necessarily. Production value helps less than a strong first five seconds and a clear message. Many effective YouTube ads are built from existing product footage, customer explanations or screen recordings, edited into a proper hook and payoff structure.
How do you prevent ads showing on unsuitable content?
We apply content exclusion settings, inventory type controls, topic and keyword exclusions, and maintained placement exclusion lists. Placement reports are reviewed regularly and low-quality channels are removed as they appear.
How is YouTube advertising billed?
Depending on format you pay per view, per thousand impressions or per conversion. Skippable in-stream typically charges after 30 seconds or on interaction, while bumper and non-skippable formats are impression based. We select the model that matches the campaign objective, not the cheapest headline rate.
Does YouTube advertising work for international audiences?
Yes. Moon Workshop runs YouTube campaigns for audiences in Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the United States. Each market needs its own language version, subtitles and often a different hook, since humor and directness translate poorly.
